A popular brand of potato chips is the latest product in Canada to be recalled by over fears of salmonella contamination.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced on Monday that the smoky bacon flavour of Lay's potato chips contains hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) from a spoiled batch of the flavour enhancer produced in the United States.

The recall only affects the 43-gram, snack-size bags of chips bearing a "fresh until" stamp dated between March 23 and May 4, and the 235-gram, full-sized bags dated from March 23 until April 27.

The tainted HVP has resulted in 55 product recalls in Canada and 140 in the U.S. since manufacturer Basic Food Flavors Inc. first learned of the presence of salmonella in its facility on Jan. 21. But the Nevada-based company continued to distribute HVP to clients until Feb. 15, prompting the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued its first recall notice on March 2.

Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but consuming food contaminated with these bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a food-borne illness.

In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis might cause short-term symptoms, such as high fever, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

No illness has been reported in Canada so far in relation to the recalled products.
